Luke Tyerman — the foremost Victorian biographer of John Wesley — produced *Wesley's Designated Successor* in 1882 as a substantial life of John William Fletcher (Jean Guillaume de la Fléchère, 1729–1785), the Swiss-born Anglican clergyman whom Wesley publicly designated as his preferred successor. Fletcher predeceased Wesley by six years and is remembered as one of the saintliest figures of the eighteenth-century evangelical revival.
