Luke Tyerman's *Life and Times of the Rev. John Wesley* (1870–1872) is the most thorough Victorian biography of Wesley in English. Volume 3 covers the closing decades of Wesley's life — the consolidation of the Methodist societies, the conflicts over ordination and lay-preaching, the foundation of American Methodism, and Wesley's death in 1791.
