Dmitri Volkov does not believe in the true mate pull. He has spent thirty-eight years treating it the way a practical man treats mythology — as a story other people tell to explain choices they've already made. He is precise, controlled, and very good at the particular discipline of running a criminal operation without letting emotion enter the operational calculus.

Then a runner bolts from the back of a warehouse deal, and Grigor brings him down, and Dmitri catches him by the jacket — and his wolf goes completely, catastrophically still.

Elian is a Marez cartel runner. Young, fast, and smart enough to have had an exit plan before he walked into that building. He gives his name because a name costs nothing and buys a little time. He does not show fear, which Dmitri notes with a precision that is starting to alarm him. He smells like cartel-issue scent blockers, thick and synthetic, but underneath that something else is getting through — and Dmitri's wolf recognized it before his rational mind had finished forming a sentence.

The math says Elian knows more than a routine runner should. The math also says something else, which Dmitri is in the process of refusing to acknowledge.

What follows is forty minutes north, a safehouse above a boat repair shop, and a forced proximity situation that Dmitri would describe as operational containment and that his wolf would describe as something else entirely. Elian would describe it as a problem, and he would be correct, but the problem turns out to be considerably more complicated than either of them anticipated.

Dark, tightly written, and built around two people with incompatible agendas and no good exit from the same room. The true mate pull hits like a freight train and the slow burn that follows earns every page.
