Artaxerxes I was an influential Achaemenid King of Kings who ruled the Persian Empire during a critical period of imperial consolidation and diplomacy in the 5th century BCE. Succeeding his father, Xerxes I, he successfully navigated internal court intrigue, suppressed major rebellions in Egypt, and shifted Persian foreign policy away from direct military conflict with Greece toward strategic diplomacy, culminating in the Peace of Callias. His reign is also notable in biblical history for his patronage and decree allowing Ezra and Nehemiah to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
