What happens when every breath becomes a battle?
Born into poverty on New York City's Lower East Side, Paul Rivera learned early that survival meant fighting. Raised on the streets of the Bronx, he struggled with addiction, faced repeated setbacks, and searched for purpose through military service. Just when it seemed he had overcome the greatest challenges of his past, he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis-a progressive lung disease that slowly stole his ability to breathe.
As his condition worsened, Paul faced rejection from one transplant program, was sent home believing he was dying, and eventually found hope through the Montefiore/Einstein Comprehensive Lung Transplant Center. On Friday, November 13, 2020, he received the lifesaving lung transplant that gave him a second chance at life.
Everyone Loves a Comeback is more than a memoir. It is a deeply personal story of resilience, redemption, faith, and the extraordinary gift of organ donation. With honesty and humility, Paul shares his journey from the streets to the operating room, from despair to hope, and from merely surviving to living with purpose.
