First published in 1891, The Picture of Dorian Gray is Oscar Wilde's haunting masterpiece of beauty, temptation, identity, and moral corruption. When the young Dorian Gray wishes that a painted portrait might grow old in his place, his desire is mysteriously granted, allowing him to pursue a life of pleasure while the portrait alone bears the consequences of his choices. This edition features more than 220 original annotations that illuminate late Victorian London, the Aesthetic and Decadent movements, art and collecting, classical and biblical allusions, Wilde's literary influences, and the historical and cultural world that shaped one of the defining novels of the Victorian age.
