He was born the son of a wild desert donkey and a champion racehorse — and everyone told him he'd never win a race.
Meet Leroy: a floppy-eared, big-hearted mule who refuses to let anyone else define what he's capable of. When a poster for the legendary 1976 Great American Horse Race — 3,000 miles, thirteen states, one hundred days — catches his eye, Leroy sets out to prove that heart beats pedigree every time.
Along the dusty trail, Leroy's journey becomes about far more than winning. He comforts a grieving little girl who hasn't spoken since her mother's death. He's miraculously reunited with the father he never knew. And deep in a rocky canyon, he risks everything to rescue a helpless stranger in need.
Narrated in Leroy's own warm, funny, faith-filled voice — and woven throughout with Scripture that brought his story to life — this inspiring tale reminds readers of every age that God sees the heart, not the outward appearance, and that the biggest victories rarely happen at the finish line.
Inspired by the real 1976 Great American Horse Race and a real rescued puppy named Canyon, this is a story the whole family will want to read again and again — out loud, together, and straight from the heart.
