A portrait that should not exist. A love that defies time. A haunting that refuses to fade.

The Ebony Frame is a haunting supernatural short story by Edith Nesbit, blending romance, mystery, and Gothic atmosphere.

The story follows a man who becomes deeply connected to a mysterious portrait housed in an ebony frame. As he investigates its origin, he discovers a tragic love story tied to the painting—one that seems to cross the boundaries between life, death, and memory.

With its emotional depth, eerie atmosphere, and subtle supernatural tension, the narrative builds a sense of quiet dread while exploring themes of love, fate, obsession, and the persistence of the past.

A refined and atmospheric Gothic tale, The Ebony Frame remains one of Nesbit's most elegant contributions to classic ghost fiction.
