A crumbling Gothic mansion, a melancholy young dreamer, and a gathering of eccentric intellectuals set the stage for one of the most brilliant literary satires of the nineteenth century.

In Nightmare Abbey, Thomas Love Peacock transforms the gloomy conventions of Gothic fiction into a sparkling comedy of ideas. At the center of the story is Scythrop Glowry, an idealistic young man whose philosophical obsessions and romantic entanglements lead him into a series of amusing complications. As poets, scholars, reformers, and skeptics assemble within the shadowy halls of Nightmare Abbey, lively debates and eccentric behavior reveal the absurdities of fashionable thought and human vanity.

Originally published in 1818, this enduring classic offers sharp wit, memorable characters, and insightful social commentary. Peacock's clever parody of Romantic melancholy and intellectual pretension remains remarkably fresh, entertaining modern readers with its humor, intelligence, and timeless observations of human nature.

Combining Gothic atmosphere with literary comedy, Nightmare Abbey stands as a masterpiece of English satire and an essential work for lovers of classic fiction.
