Description & Overview

The Mysteries of the Human Soul is the English translation of Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali's al-Madnun Bihi 'Ala Ghairi Ahlihi — a work whose title itself signals its nature: truths entrusted only to those fit to receive them. Written in the form of an extended philosophical inquiry structured as questions posed by sincere seekers and answered by al-Ghazali, this text ventures into terrain few Islamic scholars dared map openly: the metaphysical constitution of the human soul, its relationship to the body, its origin and destiny, and the epistemological limits that govern what may and may not be disclosed to the uninitiated.

Al-Ghazali opens by examining the Qur'anic concept of taswiyah — the preparation of matter to receive the soul — and nafkh, the divine act of breathing the spirit into form. From this foundation, he constructs a sustained argument for the soul's indivisibility, its non-spatial existence, and its independence from the body it governs. Each chapter deepens the inquiry: the soul's condition after death, its relationship to the Universal Soul, the significance of the Preserved Tablet (Lawh al-Mahfuz) and the Pen as cosmological realities, and the theological necessity of belief in bodily resurrection, the Day of Judgment, and the intercession of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The work engages directly with the positions of the Ash'ariyyah, Mu'tazilah, Karamiyyah, and Hanabilah, and with the philosophical legacy of Avicenna (Abu 'Ali ibn Sina), whose Peripatetic arguments are both acknowledged and critiqued. The ethical architecture of the afterlife — the Sirat, the Balance, the punishment of the grave, the pleasures of Paradise — is interpreted through al-Ghazali's distinctive synthesis of rational theology and Sufi illumination. The closing chapters address the vision of God and the Prophet in dream-states, and the doctrine of divine example (mithal) as distinct from resemblance (shabah), concluding with a meditation on the mystical annihilation (fana') in which the soul recognizes that its attributes are ultimately derived from, and transparent to, those of God.

Translated into English by Abdul Qayyum "Shafaq" Hazarvi and published by Qadeem Press, this edition makes one of al-Ghazali's most closely held treatises available to non-Arabic-speaking readers of Islamic philosophy, theology, and spirituality.
