Following the events of Thrown to the Fire, Ella remains shackled with a conlút cuff, causing a domino effect of secrets from both themselves and the Elders to fall. With those secrets come consequences, ranging from small inconveniences to large-scale betrayals.

While Lena grapples with the changes of no longer being Ella's protector, and what it means for the future, Ella is thrown headfirst into nightmares and her memories that have remained hidden for fifteen years.

"The heat of flames licks inside my lungs, the smoke choking my airways. Fire is supposed to be light, a gas, and yet it weighs heavily in my chest. I'm made of ash and ember, unable to breathe. A part of me wants to succumb to the inferno, allow it to dismantle me from the inside out in an implosion. The flames could pour out of my mouth, leaving destruction in its wake."
