Description & Overview

The first comprehensive motif-architecture analysis across John Hawkes's complete seventeen-novel corpus.

Across those seventeen novels, the word "grape" appears 129 times - concentrated in the mature triad and codified in Innocence in Extremis (1985). But the grape does not operate alone. Systematic analysis reveals a five-part symbolic architecture that existing scholarship has overlooked: the grape functions as threshold catalyst, surrounded by four counter-motifs - camera, wound, enclosure, and child/death - forming a repeating system whose clustering at structurally significant moments is statistically non-random (p < 0.01).

Working in the tradition of Matthew Jockers' Macroanalysis and Franco Moretti's Distant Reading, and extending the Hawkes scholarship of Greiner, Kuehl, O'Donnell, and Ferrari, this study integrates close reading with distributional text analysis to reveal Hawkes as more deliberately architectural, more internally consistent, than anyone has recognized.

The debris of his fiction reveals its innate design.

Innocence, Desire, and the Architecture of the Fall is essential reading for scholars of postwar American experimental fiction, digital humanists, and every reader who has finished The Blood Oranges or Travesty suspecting the pattern was load-bearing. It was.
