Herbert Silberer was an Austrian psychoanalyst and one of the early disciples of Freud. *Hidden Symbolism of Alchemy and the Occult Arts* (1914) is his major book — a psychoanalytic reading of the symbolism of Western alchemy as an unconscious projection of the soul's own process of integration and individuation. The book deeply influenced the later development of analytical psychology under Carl Jung.
