John Henry Newman delivered nine lectures at the founding of the Catholic University of Ireland in 1852 on the nature and purpose of a university. *The Idea of a University Defined and Illustrated* (1873) gathers those lectures with later essays on related subjects. The book has remained the most-cited single statement of the classical liberal-arts conception of higher education ever written in English.
