George T. McCarthy was an American Roman Catholic priest and military chaplain who served with the United States Army on the Western Front in 1917–1918. *The Greater Love* (1920) is his sustained memoir of his chaplaincy — of the trenches at Chateau-Thierry and the Argonne, of the men he attended in their last moments, and of the sacramental life of a soldier-priest in the closing months of the First World War.
