Claire Russo arrives in a Sicilian hill town to investigate a death — and finds four more beneath it.

When an insurance investigator dies beside the reliquary of a venerated saint in Petralia Soprana, Claire's company sends her to close the file. The death is recorded as natural. So are the three others linked to the same remote sanctuary — all of them, it turns out, people who asked the wrong questions about a body that has not decayed in four hundred years.

The saint's preservation has no explanation the Church has been willing to provide. The only man with keys to what lies beneath the reliquary has served as custodian of this building for his entire life — and his family before him, going back to the year the miracle was first declared.

The longer Claire stays, the clearer it becomes that the questions her predecessors asked were not merely inconvenient. They were fatal.

If she leaves without an answer, the deaths stay closed, the truth stays buried, and the next person who comes to this town looking for what she found will face it alone.
