Description & Overview
Feign’s work is confessional. He uses poetry as a "purge" to handle the "real war" of living. It isn't always comfortable to read, A shriving pew, accusatory, full of regret with a flickering candle of rebirth and restoration. Tumble spells out his rules, the ones he lives by and ones he breaks without so much as a thought. Truth, lies, exaggeration, deeply buried secrets that took flesh and soul from the author. He often explores the "underbelly" of beauty. His poems about love are rarely "pretty." They are "bittersweet," often focusing on the breaking point of relationships. He mentions an internal voice or entity called "I AM" (as seen in The Loss of Scared and Childhood Memories), which seems to represent a primal, defensive survival instinct born from 1970s Cold War anxieties. He uses sensory details to anchor his emotional outbursts—the smell of "iron" (blood), the "soggy smash" of a fall, or "fried macaroni in butter" as a comfort food from childhood. Many poems deal with sudden, violent loss. In Rage he processes the suicide of a 14-year-old girl with visceral anger, but it is deeply authentic—her story, a "fascinating novel with a ruined ending."
