Legends of the Frio

Campfire Tales: Ghosts and Tall Tales from Texas

Step into the brush country of South Texas, where campfires crackle beneath star-filled skies and every bend in the river seems to hide a story.

In this richly illustrated collection of folklore-inspired tales, author Tony Di Giosia brings together five unforgettable stories drawn from the spirit, history, and mystery of the Frio Country. Meet legendary Texas Rangers, clever tricksters, mischievous rabbits, shadowy creatures of the night, and star-crossed lovers whose story still echoes across storm-filled skies.

Inside you'll discover:

• The Headless Horseman of Uvalde County — a frontier legend inspired by the exploits of Texas Ranger Bigfoot Wallace.

• The Clever Fish of the Frio — a humorous tale of a hungry cowboy and a fish with a secret.

• Rudy Rabbit's High-Hoppin' Hullabaloo — a lively Texas tall tale full of friendship, laughter, and unexpected surprises.

• The Shadow Man of the Frio — a chilling campfire story of promises made, courage tested, and darkness lurking in the hills.

• Birth of the Whitetail — an old campfire legend telling how the first unicorns became the deer of the Texas Hill Country.

• The Legend of Thundercloud and Lightien — a timeless tale of love, loss, and the origins of thunder and lightning.

Featuring illustrations in the style of nineteenth-century wood engravings, Legends of the Frio Country captures the tradition of stories shared beside campfires, passed from one generation to the next, and remembered long after the flames have died down.

Whether you're a lover of folklore, Texas history, ghost stories, or family-friendly adventure, these tales invite you to pull your chair a little closer to the fire and listen.

Because every good campfire deserves a good story.
