Description & Overview
Anthony Trollope's Framley Parsonage (serialized 1860–61) is the fourth of the six Chronicles of Barsetshire and the book that made him famous. Written for the very first numbers of the new Cornhill Magazine and illustrated by John Everett Millais, it was an immediate sensation — and it remains one of the warmest and most inviting doorways into Trollope's vast, humane fictional county.
Mark Robarts is a young clergyman to whom everything has come easily: the great Lady Lufton's patronage has given him a comfortable living, a good house, and every prospect of advancement before he is thirty. But Mark is ambitious and a little vain, and when the worldly, fast-living Member of Parliament Nathaniel Sowerby flatters him into guaranteeing a money bill, the easy assurance that he will never have to pay turns slowly into disaster. Before long the bailiffs are at the parsonage door, and a young parson's career and good name hang in the balance.
Braided through Mark's troubles is one of Trollope's loveliest love stories. His sister Lucy — quick, plain-spoken, and quite without fortune — is loved by Lady Lufton's son, who wants to marry her; but his proud mother means him for the cold, beautiful Griselda Grantly and thinks Lucy too insignificant for the position. Lucy will have her lord only if his mother comes and asks for her with her own lips. Beneath the genial surface, Trollope writes a sharp study of money, ambition, and the choices left to women, all told in the most companionable narrative voice in English fiction.
