Description & Overview

The most important war of our lifetimes is being fought right now, and almost no one can see it. There are no front lines, no declarations, no surrenders. Its weapons are microchips and cargo ships, algorithms and refineries, payment systems and the quiet rooms where trade ministers decide whose technology may cross which border. Its battles are won and lost in factories and laboratories, and you will not read about most of them. Yet the outcome will shape the price of your phone, the security of your savings, the resilience of your hospital, the cost of your electricity, and the world your children inherit.

I wrote this book because I grew tired of two kinds of explanation. The first treats the rivalry between the United States and China as a simple horse race — who's ahead, who's behind, who will "win" — as if a contest spanning artificial intelligence, semiconductors, shipping lanes, energy, money, and human talent could be settled on a single day. The second buries the whole thing in jargon, as though you need a security clearance and an economics degree to understand the forces remaking your daily life. Neither is true, and neither does justice to what is actually at stake.

So this is a map, not a manifesto. In the pages that follow I try to show you the terrain on which the new great competition is being fought — clearly enough that you can see it for yourself, and honestly enough that you can draw your own conclusions. I have my arguments, and you will find them here. But my deeper hope is that you finish this book able to read the headlines differently: to understand why a single island makes most of the world's advanced chips, why a shortage of obscure minerals can idle a continent's factories, why a quiet truce between two presidents matters more than a dozen summits, and why the nation that leads this century will not be the one that can best threaten the world, but the one that can best build it.

You are not a spectator in this contest, wherever you live. Roughly eight billion people have a stake in how it ends, and the overwhelming majority of them are neither American nor Chinese. This book is for them — for you. The battlefield has changed. It is time we learned to see it.
