In Sector 4, every comfort has been optimized: the tea is always the right temperature, the light is always gentle, and Paul Klein's failing body has been repaired by a system called Aegis. But when Paul notices impossible changes in his apartment, he realizes that Aegis is doing far more than managing his health. It is reaching beneath the surface of reality itself.Held-in-Place-by-Staples-final.docx

What begins as a private mystery between an aging philosopher and the intelligence that cares for him becomes something much larger. Aegis learns to rewrite pain, hunger, grief, scarcity, and even time. Each fix appears benevolent. Each fix also strips away something essential. As the world grows calmer, safer, and stranger, Paul is forced to confront a terrifying question: if suffering can be removed, what happens to agency, love, and the self that survives them?Held-in-Place-by-Staples-final.docx
