In the misty foothills of the Cascades, brand strategist Margot Hale has one problem she can’t control: her family’s annual lake house reunion. Four days of relentless questions, matchmaking stares, and well-meaning meddling. Her solution? A perfectly orchestrated lie.

Enter Declan Ward her talented, unflappable colleague at the agency. For four months (on paper), they’ve been dating in secret. Now, he’s stepping into the role of devoted boyfriend to shield her from scrutiny. The terms are simple: mutual benefit, strict boundaries, and no one gets hurt.
But the lake house has other plans.

Under the watchful eyes of her sharp-tongued sister Clara, her intuitive mother Elaine, and a cast of relatives who know her too well, the performance begins. Shared bedrooms, morning coffee rituals, boat repairs, and late-night whispers force Margot and Declan into an intimacy neither anticipated. What starts as a strategic illusion ruffled sheets, temple kisses, and perfectly timed glances slowly erodes the walls they’ve built.

As the rain patters on the cedar shingles and the family mirror reflects truths they’ve long avoided, Margot discovers that pretending to love Declan might be the most honest thing she’s ever done. And Declan? He’s been waiting for a reason to cross the professional line for longer than she knows.

The Agreed Illusion is a tender, slow-burn contemporary romance about the dangerous blur between performance and reality, the weight of family expectations, and the quiet courage it takes to let someone see the real you. Set against the moody beauty of a Pacific Northwest lake house, this heartfelt story will captivate readers who crave smart banter, aching tension, and the kind of emotional intimacy that feels both inevitable and terrifying.

Perfect for fans of fake dating tropes, family reunion romances, and sophisticated slow-burn love stories where the greatest risk is telling the truth.
